Presbyopia treatment

What is presbyopia?

Presbyopia is an age-related reduction that affects most people over the age of 40. As we get older, the natural lens of the eye becomes harder and less elastic.

This reduces the eye’s ability to focus sharply on nearby objects. If you have presbyopia you may find it difficult to change from seeing things in the distance to nearby. Some people will need bifocal or varifocal glasses to see clearly at all distances.

Presbyopia is not the same thing as farsightedness (hyperopia). Presbyopia is often confused with farsightedness because they both cause things to appear blurry up close. If you have farsightedness, your glasses may become less effective as you age, so you may need to wear reading glasses before presbyopia starts.

What are the symptoms of presbyopia?

Common symptoms that you may experience due to presbyopia include:

  • Headaches or fatigue when doing close work
  • Needing to hold books or your laptop at a distance to see clearly
  • Needing to squint to read small print
  • Needing a bright light to read

When should I see a doctor?

If you experience any of the symptoms described above, you should see your GP. You will usually be referred to an ophthalmologist for further examination.
