In-growing toenails occur when the sides of the toenail grow into the surrounding skin and pierce it, causing the toe to become red, swollen and tender. The big toe is most likely to be affected. Two possible causes are badly cut toenails and tight fitting shoes.
There are a variety of self-care treatments, but if the ingrowing toenail becomes too severe or infected it may require surgery. Surgery will involve the removal of either the entire toenail or a part of the toenail, with a combination of chemicals and surgical methods. Both procedures can be undertaken under either a local or general anaesthetic.
After the surgery, your toe will be bandaged to aid healing and prevent infection. You should keep the affected foot rested and elevated for the next week as the swelling settles.
