Hypertension is also known as high blood pressure. Your blood pressure is the measure of your blood pressing against the artery walls as your heart pumps the blood around your body. Having high blood pressure can be dangerous, and it can increase the risk of you having a stroke or heart attack. It is important to have your blood pressure measured as the condition doesn't often have strong symptoms.
In order to measure your blood pressure, a cuff is placed around your arm and inflated to restrict blood flow. The air from the cuff is then released slowly while your pulse is checked. This gives your Consultant a measurement of your blood pressure levels.
The results of the test will determine what course of treatment is necessary for you. While some patients may find lifestyle changes sufficient, others may require medication or further testing.
It is important to be tested your blood pressure isn't too high, or you will be at risk of other conditions, such as suffering a heart attack or stroke.
There are many lifestyle changes you can make to prevent high blood pressure, such as giving up smoking, and reducing the amount of salt and alcohol in your diet. Your Consultant will answer any questions you may have.
