What is ear correction surgery?

Ears that stick out too much, or that are too large for your face, can make you self-conscious about your whole appearance. Ear correction surgery, or pinnaplasty as it is formally known, is designed to make your ears less prominent and leave them perfectly matched to the rest of the features on your face.

Why have ear correction surgery?

If you worry that your ears don’t look normal, this can have a huge impact on your self-esteem. In turn, low self-esteem can affect almost every aspect of your life. However appealing it might seem to use surgery to solve these issues, the decision to go ahead with this procedure needs careful consideration. Your ear correction operation

The operation can be performed under general or local anaesthetic and you can discuss which will suit you best with your chosen consultant surgeon. The surgeon will start by making small cuts in the crease of your ear. The cartilage will then be reshaped, or possibly even partially removed, through these incisions. Finally, your surgeon will stitch the ear back into the desired position and your ears will be packed with moulding material before being bandaged.

Recovery

Ear correction surgery is a relatively quick and straight-forward operation and you should be able to go home the same day. As with all surgery, there is likely to be some discomfort in the early stages, but this can be eased with painkillers. You should plan to take a week off work so you can give yourself the chance to fully recover. The bandages will be removed after around a week, although you will probably still have to wear smaller bandages for another fortnight to help with the natural healing process. It’s also important that you avoid any strenuous activity for at least four weeks after your operation. When everything has healed properly, you will then need to return to the hospital to have the dressing and any stitches removed.
