With state-of-the-art hospital facilities in Reading, the eye unit is specialist ophthalmology centres dedicated to the diagnosis and management of all eye conditions. We offer the very best in patient care, service and comfort, and use the very latest technology and techniques available to offer our patients the best possible outcomes.
We treat patients with all ocular problems; there is particular expertise in cataract surgery and refractive lens exchange. Our consultants are hugely experienced having collectively performed in excess of 100,000 cataract procedures.
There are now 14 consultant ophthalmic surgeons working in our units, and each is amongst the most experienced and highly qualified in their field. They are committed to providing our patients with first-class eye treatment, and are all NHS trained and fellows of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.
Our consultant teams, backed up by specialist nurses and optometrists, manage the entire range of eye diseases, including the very latest treatments for cataract and retinal disorders such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The latest technical advances in lens implantation including multifocal and extended range of vision lenses are available to reduce reliance on glasses after cataract surgery.
Age is the main risk factor for eye diseases. Half of all people between the ages of 65 and 74 have cataracts, and this rises to 70% after the age of 75. Glaucoma is most common in people over 60.
Although a referral from your optometrist or general practitioner is preferable, you can book your private appointment directly with the consultant of your choice and we will contact your GP, optometrist or optician for a referral.
