A quick overview of your knee

Your knee is referred to as a ‘hinge joint’, meaning it allows movement in a front and back direction. However, the structure of the joint does also allow for a bit of rotation.

The knee is a complex joint, made up of bones, cartilage, ligaments and tendons and while the structure of your knee means that it has a good deal of strength and stability, it is also quite susceptible to damage or injury by a number of means.

Sometimes recovering from a knee injury can be challenging, requiring specialised rehabilitation.

Three of the most common injuries/problems we see with knees are fractures around the knee joint, torn or ruptured ligaments and osteoarthritis.

Following trauma to the knee, sometimes an operation may be needed to aid healing and recovery (for example, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery). In other cases, a disease such as osteoarthritis may cause pain and a loss of mobility to such a degree that a knee replacement is advised by a doctor.

While many people who have an operation or injury to the knee can recover fairly quickly, sometime more intensive therapy will be required to help to regain lost strength and mobility. This rehabilitation can involve physiotherapy, exercise and the use of specialised therapeutic equipment.

Unfortunately though, due to the ever-increasing demand on resources in the healthcare system, many people who require it can find themselves waiting days or weeks to receive any form of knee rehabilitation. (This can of course means days or weeks of debilitating knee pain and reduced mobility that you just don’t need.)

Our priorities for you

At Circle Rehabilitation in Reading, Berkshire, our two priorities with your knee rehabilitation are to:

  • Provide you with the best combination of specialised knee therapy possible to ensure you get your strength and mobility back quickly
  • To support you emotionally and physically through the rehabilitation process, and to encourage you to achieve the best recovery of your knee function possible

Do I need rehabilitation for my knee?

Often, being able to access the right rehabilitation after an operation on the knee can make a real difference to the extent of your recovery and long-term function.

Although some people will recover quickly from a knee injury or operation, some will need more intense therapy and support to help them regain their independence.

If you’ve recently had an operation or injury to your knee and are now finding yourself struggling to weight bear without problem or finding it difficult to walk without experiencing issues with your balance, effective and focused knee rehabilitation (sometimes referred to as knee rehab) can be a major factor in helping you to adjust, adapt, recover and regain a level of independence for yourself.

That’s why we set up…

Circle Rehabilitation – providing world-class knee rehabilitation in a purpose-designed centre

Circle Rehabilitation is a state-of-the-art world-class rehabilitation centre designed with just one aim in mind – to give people like you their independence back following knee surgery or a knee injury, as quickly as possible.

We know that if you’ve had a problem with your knee you’ll be anxious about the future (and possibly also concerned about being an additional burden on those you love if you’re now less mobile than you were previously).

Early knee rehabilitation is important

If you can begin your knee rehabilitation as soon possible after an injury or operation (and only once you doctor is happy that clinical stability has been achieved), it can help to lower the risk of further complications and improve the chance of restoring full function.

The duration of your knee rehabilitation depends greatly on the nature and severity of the knee problem itself. As a very general guide, at Circle Rehabilitation we tend to have people stay with us for their knee rehab for anything between 3 nights to 14 nights, although this does vary as everyone is different.

Circle Rehabilitation – the difference is obvious

As a specialist knee rehabilitation centre, we can offer you support that can continue beyond the extremely limited time that most rehabilitation services in an acute setting are able to provide.

What you can expect when you get in touch with us

If you’re experiencing problems with your knee following recent surgery for an injury, please get in touch with us today to see how we can help you.

Once we’ve spoken with you, your case will be reviewed by one of our specialist knee consultants who will be able to assess your requirements. We deal with all enquiries quickly as we know how important your knee rehabilitation is for you.

If we think we’ll be able to help you with your knee rehabilitation we’ll be in touch to arrange a meeting with you. This can be done at Circle Rehabilitation if you’re close to Reading and able to travel or alternatively we can visit you at home if you’re unable to travel.

If you live a distance away to make an initial visit impractical we can can carry out a phone assessment instead. (It should be noted that we have people coming to us for knee rehabilitation from all over the UK. You don’t have to be living in Reading to visit with us and to benefit from our level of care and support.)

We’ll treat you as an individual, not a ‘hospital number’

Having visited with you (or talked with you on the phone), we’ll draw up a comprehensive plan for your knee rehabilitation. This will be tailored specifically to you and based on your requirements and what the best possible treatment and rehabilitation therapy would be for you.

Our highly-specialised and experienced multidisciplinary team will work with you (and anyone who is helping to support you) to ensure you receive the level of help and support you need, all based on best practice and the latest research and medical knowledge in knee rehabilitation.

Evidence-based treatment for your knee

Our knee rehabilitation programmes are built on VAMED’s proven and evidence-based Central European model to help accelerate recovery.

This European model of rehabilitation aims to provide treatment that is both cost-effective and tailored to an individuals requirements, rather than being based on the “one-size-fits-all” approach that is sadly all too common nowadays because of pressures on healthcare resources.

Throughout partnership with VAMED, we aim to alleviate the strain on acute hospitals (and the subsequent cost to the taxpayers) by providing specialised rehabilitation of the knee using high-tech equipment and experienced multidisciplinary teams.

This rehabilitation model shifts the role of patients and their families from passive recipients of care to active participants and can enable patients to move back to an independent life as soon as possible.

Your personal treatment plan

At Circle Rehabilitation our team will devise an individual treatment plan for you, including up to three hours of personal therapy a day.

We offer state of the art equipment, ample therapy space and care from a highly experienced team of therapists who are led by a rehabilitation consultant.

Your treatment plan is adjusted every day based on how you’re progressing. We measure your progress daily and can adapt the treatment plan as required.

We know that everyone is different and so we’ll make sure that your treatment plan is:

  • tailored just for you
  • based on up-to-date best practice knowledge
  • reviewed daily to ensure you’re making the progress you should be

Family members welcome!

We know that sometimes staying away from home can be unsettling for people. If you’d like a family member to stay overnight with you, every one of our 15 rooms has a pull-out bed for them to use. We find that many people really appreciate having a family member there for them in the initial stages, as an additional emotional support.

We actively encourage family members to visit and be involved in your rehabilitation as we know how much of a difference it can make. It can help your family to find out firsthand about the exercises you’re doing (and any that you may need to continue to do), and about any lifestyle changes you may have to consider in the future depending on the extent of your knee problems. They’ll also be able to encourage you when the therapy is more demanding and to celebrate the “little wins” every day with you.

We help relieve some of the strain on the healthcare system

Since we first opened doors at Circle Rehabilitation we’ve developed exceptionally strong relationships with local hospitals (such as the Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital) and with a number of local and national trauma networks (such as the Wessex Trauma Network).

With our powerful combination of advanced rehabilitation technology and equipment, our knowledgeable and experienced staff and our cost-effective ability to deliver personalised, high-quality care, we find that we’re often asked to help ease the burden on these overstretched healthcare resources by helping their patients with their knee recovery and rehabilitation.

Benefit from our expert multidisciplinary team

When you have your knee rehabilitation with us, you’ll benefit from our team of highly-specialised and skilled physicians. They work together to ensure you’ll receive the best care, treatment and support possible.

For example, we often find that family members can benefit hugely from talking with our specialist clinical psychologist. Recovering from a knee injury or operation can be challenging for everyone involved, and family members often find that being able to talk with someone about the unique pressures they’re facing is really helpful.

At Circle Rehabilitation we’re not just here for you. We’re here to support you family as well while we all work towards your knee rehabilitation and getting your independence back.

Everything we do – whether with our state-of-the-art equipment and technology or through focused individual time with one of our physiotherapists – is directed to giving you back your independence as fully and as quickly as possible.

If you are struggling to regain strength and mobility in your knee after a recent accident or operation why not have your knee rehabilitation from the very best specialists, in the very finest purpose-built rehabilitation centre and with the very best possible care?
