Fractures – an overview

A fracture is used to describe a broken or cracked bone. There are a number of different types of fractures, depending on how the bone is broken or cracked.

Sometimes recovering from a fracture can be challenging, requiring specialised rehabilitation. That’s where Circle Rehabilitation can help.

The fracture rehabilitation problem

While many people who have a fracture can recover fairly quickly, sometime more intensive therapy will be required to help to regain lost strength and mobility. This rehabilitation can involve physiotherapy, exercise and the use of specialised therapeutic equipment.

Unfortunately though, due to the ever-increasing demand on resources in the healthcare system, many people who require it can find themselves waiting days or weeks to receive any form of fracture rehabilitation. (This can of course mean additional days or weeks of debilitating pain and reduced mobility that you just don’t need.)

At Circle Rehabilitation in Reading, Berkshire, our two priorities with your fracture rehabilitation are to:

  • Provide you with the best combination of specialised fracture rehabilitation possible to ensure you get your strength and mobility back as quickly as possible
  • To support you emotionally and physically through the rehabilitation process, and to encourage you to achieve the best recovery of function achievable

Do I need rehabilitation for my fracture?

Often, being able to access the right rehabilitation after a fracture can make a real difference to the extent of your recovery and long-term function.

Although some people will recover quickly from a fracture, some will need more intense therapy and support to help them regain their independence.

If you’ve recently had a serious fracture and are now finding it hard to function physically, effective and focused fracture rehabilitation (sometimes referred to as fracture rehab) can be a major factor in helping you to adjust, adapt, recover and regain a level of independence for yourself.

That’s why we set up…

Circle Rehabilitation – providing world-class fracture rehabilitation in a purpose-designed centre

Circle Rehabilitation is a state-of-the-art world class rehabilitation centre designed with just one aim in mind – to give people like you their independence back following a fracture (and subsequent treatment), as quickly as possible.

We know that if you’ve had a serious fracture you’ll be anxious about the future (and possibly also concerned about being an additional burden on those you love if you’re now a lot less mobile than you were previously).

Early rehabilitation is important to recover from a serious fracture

If you can begin your rehabilitation as soon possible after any operation for your fracture (and only once you doctor is happy that clinical stability has been achieved), it can help to lower the risk of further complications and improve the chance of restoring full function.

The duration of your rehabilitation depends greatly on the nature and severity of the fracture itself. As a very general guide, at Circle Rehabilitation we tend to have people stay with us for rehab following a fracture for anything between 3 nights to 14 nights, although this does vary as everyone is different.

Circle Rehabilitation – the difference is obvious

As a specialist rehabilitation centre, we can offer you support that can continue beyond the extremely limited time that most rehabilitation services in an acute setting are able to provide.

What you can expect when you get in touch with us

If you’re experiencing problems following a recent fracture, please get in touch with us today to see how we can help you.

Once we’ve spoken with you, your case will be reviewed by one of our specialist consultants who will be able to assess your requirements. We deal with all enquiries quickly as we know how important prompt fracture rehabilitation is for you, and how much of a difference it can make to the extent of your recovery.

If your fracture qualifies you for our intensive rehabilitation programme we’ll be in touch to arrange a face-to-face meeting with you. This can be done at Circle Rehabilitation if you’re close to Reading and able to travel or alternatively we can visit you at home if you’re unable to travel.

If you live such a distance away as to make an initial face-to-face visit impractical we can carry out a phone assessment instead. (It should be noted that we have people coming to us for fracture rehabilitation from all over the UK. You don’t have to be living in Reading to visit with us and to benefit from our exceptional and outstanding level of care and support.)

We’ll treat you as an individual, not a ‘hospital number’

Having visited with you (or talked with you on the phone), we’ll draw up a comprehensive plan for your fracture rehabilitation. This will be tailored specifically to you and based on your requirements and what the best possible treatment and rehabilitation therapy would be for you.

Our highly-specialised and experienced multidisciplinary team will work with you (and anyone who is helping to support you) to ensure you receive the level of help and support you need, all based on best practice and the latest research and medical knowledge in fracture rehabilitation.

Circle offers you full support in a comfortable, friendly and relaxed environment. When you visit with us, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the state-of-the-art facilities we offer and the luxurious environment you’ll be in. From the tasty and nutritious meals through to the spacious rooms available you’ll be well looked after from the moment you walk in the main entrance.

Evidence-based treatment for your fracture

All of our rehabilitation programmes are built on VAMED’s proven and evidence-based Central European model to help accelerate recovery.

This European model of rehabilitation aims to provide treatment that is both cost-effective and tailored to an individuals requirements, rather than being based on the “one-size-fits-all” approach that is sadly all too common nowadays because of pressures on healthcare resources.

Throughout partnership with VAMED, we aim to alleviate the strain on acute hospitals (and the subsequent cost to the taxpayers) by providing specialised rehabilitation for serious fractures using high-tech equipment and experienced multidisciplinary teams.

This rehabilitation model shifts the role of patients and their families from passive recipients of care to active participants and can enable patients to move back to an independent life as soon as possible.

We use only the very finest rehabilitation technology and equipment, including:

  • Anti-gravity treadmill: can help to shorten recovery time, improve mobility and reduce injury
  • Biodex Balance System 3D: this helps to increase balance and agility.
  • Hi-Tech Hydro Physio: this can help relieve joint and muscle pain and increase your range of motion
  • Biodex System 4: this measures the control and strength of isolated muscle groups.
  • Shockwave Therapy: this is used to stimulate healing of muscles
  • LiteGait: this enables partial weight-bearing rehabilitation

Your personal treatment plan

At Circle Rehabilitation our team will devise an individual treatment plan for you, including up to three hours of personal therapy a day.

We offer state of the art equipment (such as that listed above), ample therapy space and care from a highly experienced team of therapists who are led by a rehabilitation consultant.

Your treatment plan is adjusted every day based on how you’re progressing. Rather than giving you the same exercises to do for weeks at a time, we measure your progress daily and will adapt the treatment plan as required.

We know that everyone is different and so we’ll make sure that your treatment plan is:

  • tailored just for you
  • based on up-to-date best practice knowledge
  • reviewed daily to ensure you’re making the progress you should be

Family members welcome!

We know that sometimes staying away from home can be unsettling for people. If you’d like a family member to stay overnight with you, you’ll be delighted to know that every one of our 15 rooms has a pull-out bed for them to use.

We find that many people really appreciate having a family member there for them in the initial stages, as an additional emotional support.

In fact we actively encourage family members to visit and be involved in your rehabilitation, as we know how much of a difference it can make.

It can help your family to find out firsthand about the exercises you’re doing (and any that you may need to continue to do), and about any lifestyle changes you may have to consider in the future depending on the severity of your fracture. It gives them an exceptionally clear and accurate understanding of exactly what your rehabilitation involves and how demanding it can be for you.

They’ll also be able to encourage you when the therapy is more demanding and to celebrate the “little wins” every day with you.

We help relieve some of the strain on the healthcare system

Since we first opened our doors at Circle Rehabilitation, we’ve developed exceptionally strong relationships with local hospitals (such as the Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital) and with a number of local and national trauma networks (such as the Wessex Trauma Network).

With our powerful combination of advanced rehabilitation technology and equipment, our knowledgeable and experienced staff and our cost-effective ability to deliver personalised, high-quality care, we find that we’re often asked to help ease the burden on overstretched healthcare resources by helping their patients with their recovery and personalised rehabilitation following a significant fracture.

Benefit from our expert multidisciplinary team

When you have your rehabilitation with us, you’ll benefit from our team of highly-specialised and skilled physicians. They work together to ensure you’ll receive the best care, treatment and support possible.

For example, we often find that family members can benefit hugely from talking with our specialist clinical psychologist. Recovering from a serious fracture (and any subsequent operations needed to treat it) can be challenging for everyone involved, and family members often find that being able to talk with someone about the unique pressures they’re facing is really helpful.

At Circle Rehabilitation we’re not just here for you. We’re here to support you family as well while we all work towards your fracture rehabilitation and getting your independence back.

Everything we do – whether with our state-of-the-art equipment and technology or through focused individual time with one of our physiotherapists – is directed to giving you back your independence as fully and as quickly as possible.

We offer both residential (inpatient) and by appointment (outpatient) care, so can help you whatever your fracture rehabilitation needs.

If you are struggling to regain strength, mobility or function following a recent fracture, why not have your rehabilitation from the very best specialists, in the very finest purpose-built rehabilitation centre and with the very best possible care?
