Architecture and Design

Outstanding architecture and design is an important feature of Circle’s hospitals, since we believe that patients feeling relaxed and comfortable in their environment is key to optimal medical outcomes.

The model for our hospital buildings was established by Norman Foster’s design for Circle Bath, which opened in 2010, featuring generous amounts of open space and widespread access to natural light including in operating theatres.

Circle Reading was designed by specialist architectural and structural engineering practice Bryden Wood, with the mission to create a sustainable, low carbon building adopting standardised production processes, that in turn can inspire the design of future hospitals.

The building has a distinctive, “basket-weave” glass cladding. Inside is a stunning double-height atrium, where patients meet with specialists or visitors, and can have a cup of tea and a freshly-prepared meal from the cafe. All patient rooms have windows facing an inner courtyard, clad in western red cedar, with a view of the building’s green roof: a soothing outlook. Rooms are luxuriously spacious and the hospital’s public areas calm and airy. High quality materials such as oak flooring are used throughout.

Hospitality

Circle has developed a model of luxury hotel-style hospitality which is second to none in the healthcare sector. In each Circle facility, a hospitality services lead is appointed at commissioning phase with target recruitment of support staff – receptionists, telephonists, porters, concierge team, café and canteen staff – from a hotel backgound. By putting top-quality services at the heart of our thinking, Circle offers the wow factor from the moment you step through the door.

At Circle Reading, you can relax in the airy atrium or in the comfy top-floor rehabilitation lounge. Our bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms are spacious and luxuriously fitted out to a five-star hotel specification.

They have free wi-fi, and a guest bed for a partner or parent to stay overnight can be provided. Circle Reading’s concierge service can organise chauffeured travel in a luxury car to and from the hospital and arrange other services, often at a discounted rate.

Food

Circle’s sites employ executive chefs trained in Michelin-starred establishments, and offer nutritious, high-quality food prepared with locally-sourced, mainly organic ingredients. We’ve worked hard to make the menus appropriate for patients in different settings at different stages of their treatment and recovery. 100% of patient and visitor meals are cooked from scratch.
