Nephrology at Circle Reading Hospital

Nephrology, otherwise known as renal medicine, is a branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases.

These can include hypertension, diabetic nephropathy, chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury, glomerulonephritis, urinary abnormalities such as blood or protein, dialysis and kidney transplantation medicine.

If you have any concerns about your kidneys, our nephrologist at Circle Reading Hospital can offer an expert opinion to ensure the best outcome of your kidney problems.

To help make the underlying diagnosis, you will always need to have blood and urine tests, often an ultrasound scan of your kidneys, sometimes a CT scan or MRI. Some patients may need a kidney biopsy, a procedure done under local anaesthetic to obtain small pieces of kidney tissue to be examined under microscopes.

Treatment of kidney diseases depends on the underlying cause. The aim is to improve or stop further deterioration of kidney function.
