Circle Reading Hospital exclusion criteria for NHS e-Referral (Choose & Book) patients

  • BMI greater than 45
  • Patient under the age of 18
  • MI/CVA/Recurrent TIA within the last 6 months
  • Cardiac related disorders
  • Life threatening respiratory disorders (COPD, Bronchiectasis etc.)
  • Severe & life threatening blood disorders
  • Unstable psychiatric disorder
  • Visual acuities under 6/12 for cataract surgery
  • Glaucoma
  • Lid cyst removal

Ophthalmology primary care exclusion criteria for NHS e-Referral (Choose & Book) patients

  • Glaucoma, including visual field defects, optic disc problems and raised IOP
  • Uveitis/Iritis
  • Retinal problems – except flashing lights/floaters and choroidal naevi
  • Macula problems- including wet and dry age related macula degeneration
  • Diplopia/Orthoptic service/Squints
  • Headaches/ papilloedema
  • Keratoconus
  • Lid Cyst/chalazion/any condition requiring lid surgery

Cataract exclusion criteria for NHS e-Referral (Choose & Book) patients

  • Visual Acuities under 6/12 for cataract surgery OR there are considerations if it is negatively affecting the patients lifestyle. E.g. significant glare in daylight
  • Patients under the age of 18
  • Patients with BMI greater than 50
  • Any new cardiac problems within the last 6 months, including but not restricted to pacemaker fitting, MI, diagnosis of Atrial Fibrillation.
  • History of CVA,TIA within the last 6 months
  • Any respiratory condition that means that the patient is unable to lie flat for up to 40 minutes
  • Mobile, and if a wheelchair is used they should be able to transfer from chair to trolley easily with minimal help
  • Any patients already in the care of Ophthalmology in another hospital
  • Unstable psychiatric disorder
  • Any patients that do not have capacity to give informed consent
  • Uncontrolled diabetes. Random blood sugar should be 12mmol or less and HbA1c less than 69mmols
  • Previous or current complicated ophthalmic history
