Vascular Unit at Circle Nottingham Hospital

The vascular service at Circle Nottingham undertakes the assessment and treatment of arterial diseases, abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysms, varicose veins*, diabetic foot conditions and general vascular surgery.

It has a Diagnostic Imaging Unit on the same floor, where patients for receive scans and Doppler studies to investigate the performance of their arteries and check for any narrowing. This can usually be performed at the patient’s first consultant appointment as a one-stop service, speeding diagnosis and the commencement of treatment.

Venesection (the therapeutic removal of blood) is also undertaken by this department for patients with genetic haemochromatosis (a condition in which the body stores too much iron) or polycythaemia (where a patient’s red blood cell count is higher than normal).

Some surgical treatments, such as carotid endarterectomy (for the prevention of strokes) may be performed at the Queen’s Medical Centre following initial assessment at Circle Nottingham, with follow-up care at Circle Nottingham in nurse-led clinics, providing continuity of care.  Many surgical treatments take place in one of Circle Nottingham's five operating theatres and overnight care with en-suite facilities can be provided, where needed.

*Varicose vein surgery is not normally funded by the NHS. For more information on varicose veins and the potential treatment options available you can learn more in our ‘Varicose veins explained’ section.
