New Circle Rehabilitation Hospital opens in Birmingham

"Today marks the next significant milestone in our vision to provide affordable rehabilitation services, customised and tailored to our patient's individual needs. The COVID crisis has exposed the current gap of around 10,000 inpatient rehabilitation services. We are building on what was started by Dr Sir Ludwig Guttmann in 1943 who introduced life-changing spinal injury rehabilitation in the UK and the world. This led to the first Paralympic games in 1948. The UK has the opportunity to become an international leader in the field of rehabilitation again by galvanising our clinical, technological and digital experience to support our patients back home and to work.

The launch of our specialist centre in Birmingham is a small step towards closing the gap. Across our network of hospitals, we now have an intensive rehabilitation hub with 120 beds that is supported by doctors, therapists and nurses from Circle Rehabilitation and the BMI Priory and Edgbaston Hospitals. This will allow us to support medically stable patients not only during the acute phase of their care but also during their recovery from conditions such as COVID-19, cardiac attacks, stroke and cancer. Surviving these illnesses is not enough we can now support patients so they have quality of life when they return home and to support them back to work.

This is a welcomed addition to services we are already able to offer closer to patient homes through our Circle Health and BMI Healthcare hospital network where we have over 50 therapy teams, supported by 10,000 staff and 6,000 doctors.  Not only is this a significant step in bringing tried and tested international rehabilitation services to the UK, but it also provides a much-needed addition to the healthcare market that will allow patients to recover in an appropriate healthcare setting and to fully support them in their recovery goals, this could be either a stay at our new rehabilitation hospital, access to our therapy team at a local Circle or BMI hospital or therapy at home through the latest virtual technology." - Massoud Fouladi, Co-founder of Circle Health Group
