MP visits Circle Bath Hospital to thank staff for supporting NHS cancer patients through COVID

North East Somerset MP and Cabinet Minister, Jacob Rees-Mogg, last week visited Circle Bath Hospital to thank doctors and nurses for taking on urgent NHS cancer work for patients in Bath and the surrounding areas during the pandemic.

Since April, Circle has seen nearly 10,000 local NHS patients to help relieve pressure on neighbouring NHS trusts treating covid-19 patients, providing many of them with urgent NHS cancer treatment.

Staff converted the entire premises into an urgent NHS cancer treatment hospital at short notice when the pandemic struck. In the space of two weeks, 50 NHS staff were welcomed and inducted to begin work on-site, and hundreds of items of NHS equipment were installed to deliver urgent breast and bowel cancer surgery, chemotherapy and children’s cancer appointments through a unique partnership with the local NHS.

Wards, recovery areas and offices were converted into specialist cancer treatment clinics, and staff previously working in administrative and office-based jobs volunteered to take on cleaning, catering and healthcare assistant roles to help meet the surge in demand.

In addition, the hospital welcomed staff and patients from Yeovil District Hospital to provide urgent oncology services. The team also supported with trauma surgery for hand, wrist and knee procedures, along with urgent ENT cancer surgery.

Speaking after his visit, Jacob Rees-Mogg MP said: ‘Circle Health Group staff have worked tirelessly to support our NHS at this time of national crisis, having treated thousands of urgent cases over the last few months, and I was delighted to meet some of the doctors and nurses in person at Circle Bath to express my gratitude for their service. Their work to transform their hospital into an urgent NHS cancer centre in a matter of days when the pandemic hit was truly impressive. It is heartening to see how the NHS and independent sectors have pulled together to ensure vital cancer care continued.’
