Lord Mayor unveils new £60m hospital in Birmingham

Cllr Yvonne Mosquito, the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, today marked the all-important completion of the structure at the top of Circle Birmingham Hospital.

The state-of-the-art hospital in Edgbaston will be finished and fully kitted out for June 2019, and will the first hospital in the country to provide large-scale rehabilitation for patients who have undergone surgery for musculokeletal conditions or have neurological conditions.

Cllr Mosquito said: “In the context of Birmingham’s transport and infrastructure improvements, the big regeneration programmes, Circle is cushioned in the right place to deliver world-class facilities.” She said this marks “another milestone in the creation of an international centre of excellence for healthcare in this great city of Birmingham.”

Noting that the hospital will “have the latest in robotics and AI to help surgeons”, she said that: “Perhaps most importantly the rehabilitation facilities will change lives, in so many ways – possibility unquantifiably and immeasurably. People will stop dying early, and reduce unnecessarily with poor quality of lives in nursing homes, when they could have their mobility restored.

Our rehabilitation centre is the first of its kind in the UK, focusing on musculoskeletal and neurological conditions. It will truly transform people’s lives offer patients a true alternative to what can often be a very painful and depressing period of their lives.”

Circle Birmingham will create 250 new jobs, include a wide range of apprenticeships, and Circle has already started making appointments.
