International Nurses Day

Sunday 12th May

It's not just doctors that aid our patients to better health. Nurses, renowned for their compassion, kindness, care and selflessness, also play a vital role in the welfare, safety and recovery of patients. In light of that, we are jumping at the opportunity to celebrate our wonderful nursing team this International Nurses Day. May 12th marks the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth, who is widely considered as the founder of modern nursing.

Here at Circle we have a large team of nurses that are paramount to delivering the high standards of care we all so passionately admire. To celebrate we are decorating a number of patient areas and praising our great nursing teams across all of our hospitals.

Here's some insight into their thoughts on the day and how they got into nursing, starting with our recently appointed Director of Clinical Services, who started out as a nurse herself.

Emily Montgomery

Director of Clinical Services

It is with the greatest pride that as a nurse, I associate myself with the nursing and allied healthcare professionals we have in Circle.

I am relatively new into post, as Group Director of Clinical Services, but I have observed the kindness, compassion, sheer hard work and determination that you bring with you to work every day. Nobody can teach you that, it is something inside you, something special, which gives you the power to make a difference to a patient and their family. When you think back to the humble beginnings of Florence Nightingale and where we are today, what a strong voice we all have together. We influence how care is delivered and stand as professionals in our own right, whether it be as a registered nurse, allied healthcare professional or healthcare assistant.

So when you doubt yourself or have challenging days, and we all have them, think back to all those people you have made a difference to: when you held someone’s hand when they most needed it, listened to their fears and provided comfort, acted as their advocate and spoke out even though you were nervous about doing it; most of all be proud of who you are and what you have achieved.

Today I implore you to hold your head high, share your stories where you have made a difference and celebrate being the fabulous profession we all are and continue to be.

Thank you for all that you do and the extra on top. Have a wonderful day!

Lisa Carroll

Director of Nursing and AHPs

I am on a daily basis inspired and humbled by the care, compassion and dedication shown by everyone in Circle. The dedication to our patients and the constant striving to ensure we deliver world-class care never ceases to amaze me.

On International Nurses Day, the 12th May, we celebrate the skills, compassion and commitment of all our nurses in Circle and across the globe. The International Council of Nurses (ICN) campaign 'A Voice to Lead' has the aim of ensuring health for all in 2019. The ICN highlights that nurses are essential in transforming health care and health systems such that no person is left behind, without access to care or impoverished because of their need for health care. Health for All means not just the availability of health services, but a complete state of physical and mental health that enables a person to lead a socially and economically productive life.

Whilst the ICN aims may at first glance seem a challenge for us in Circle to contribute to, take a look at our services, think about what we offer, our Credo and our drive to innovate. We are in a unique position to influence the health outcomes of the patients we care for and support the delivery of new and innovative models of care. Our nurses and all Circle staff are making a difference every day to the lives of our patients and the wider healthcare community.

I am immensely proud to be Circle’s Director of Nursing and AHPs and I would like to thank them all for their hard work and the difference they make to our patients every single day.

Laura Hill

Head of Nursing and AHPs at Circle Bath Hospital

Since commencing in post as Head of Nursing & AHPs at Circle Bath Hospital in 2018, I have been overwhelmed by the compassion, courage and commitment of our nursing teams. The teams regularly go above and beyond in their care delivery and I am incredibly proud to be their Lead Nurse.

I started my own nursing career as a Nursing Auxiliary and immediately knew there was nothing more I wanted to do than become a Registered Nurse. My nursing career has given me so many opportunities and allowed me to travel. There have been days which have been sad and there have been days which have been amazing, no day is ever the same. Just knowing that little something you did for someone made all the difference to them, is a feeling one never forgets.

I would like to wish all of our nurses a very happy International Nurses Day.
