Sarah Richards has specialised in general and laparoscopic (keyhole minimal access) abdominal surgery. She has developed particular experience in complex gallbladder and hernia surgery.

She was appointed as the first female Consultant General Surgeon at the Royal United Hospital Bath in 2013. She has since become nationally recognised for the development of Surgical Ambulatory Care, which streamlines patients to rapid day-case keyhole surgery where possible. This model is now being replicated by other hospitals throughout the UK and abroad.

Miss Richards graduated in Medicine from the University of Bristol in 1997. She gained her membership to the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2001. She subsequently undertook a two-year Doctorate in Medicine. She was then appointed on a Specialist Higher Surgical Training scheme and gained wide operative experience in units including Cambridge and Bristol. Sarah is a JAG accredited upper gastrointestinal endoscopist and trainer.

During her career, Sarah has won a number of awards and has published extensively in medical peer-reviewed journals. In 2016 she was awarded Surgical Trainer of the Year in the South-West of England. Sarah is a National Clinical Lead at NHSElect in General Surgery and a Specialty Advisor in Emergency General Surgery to the Royal College of Surgeons. She is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer and Examiner for the University of Bristol Medical School. She holds a post-graduate certificate in medical education.

Sarah has a strong background in Quality Improvement and Medical Leadership. She has previously completed a Vanguard Fellowship for Emerging Leaders and most recently has undertaken a year-long Fellowship with the Health Foundation and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.

Sarah is a Forces wife and has two young children. She is a keen skier, enjoys travel and cooking.

Hernia surgery- laparoscopic and open surgery, general and local anaesthetic techniques. All techniques are available by Miss Richards’ so best practice can be offered on an individual basis.
