Personal Profile

Dr Husham Al-shather is a consultant in pain medicine and anaesthesia. He specialises in the management of chronic pain conditions. He provides a variety of interventional and non-interventional treatments for this specific patient population. Husham is a Fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine of the Royal College of Anaesthetists and a Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists.

Husham specialises in managing patients with Lower back pain, Neck pain, Neuropathic pain, Abdominal pain, Acute pain, Complex regional pain syndrome, Post-stroke pain and Fibromyalgia. He performs epidural steroids injections, facet joint injections, sacroiliac joint injections, nerve root injections, peripheral nerve blocks and sympathetic blocks.

He completed higher specialist training in Pain Management and Anaesthetics at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals in London. During this time he undertook a Regional Anaesthesia Training at Queen Victoria Hospital. He then completed his Advanced Pain Training at St George's Hospital and Ashford & St Peter’s NHS trust.

Since he joined The Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust as a consultant in Pain Management and Anaesthetics in 2016, he has developed a very good reputation in providing patients with optimal clinical care and scored highly for rating of clinical effectiveness and patient satisfaction. This has been gained by working in a robust multidisciplinary team which emphasises the use of proven and evidence based medicine.

In addition to Pain Management, Husham is an expert in ultrasound guided procedures and regional anaesthesia. He is a faculty member teaching at various national and international courses. He has numerous publications in peer reviewed journals and book chapters in the field of pain medicine and anaesthesia.

Outside medicine, he spends what little free time he has reading about the activities he used to pursue. Since the arrival of his two children, family commitments have overtaken almost all other activities on the home front, and they are his main focus. He would like to say that he is still a keen tennis player and spends some time cycling.
