Hysterectomy Surgery
A hysterectomy is a gynaecological procedure that involves removing a woman's uterus (womb). Women often have a hysterectomy for a variety of different reasons such as heavy periods, fibroids, endometriosis, unsuccessfully treated pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), prolapse or cancer of the uterus, ovaries or cervix. A hysterectomy can now also be performed laparoscopically which enables a quicker recovery time for the patient.
Gynaecological Laparoscopy & Hysteroscopy
A hysteroscopy is a gynaecological diagnostic treatment where a narrow telescope and camera (hysteroscope) is inserted into the vagina to examine the inside of the womb. This enables a consultant to see inside the womb and assess whether any further intervention or surgery needs to be performed. A hysteroscopy is usually carried out as an outpatient or day case procedure, and local anaesthetic is usually applied to make the procedure as comfortable as possible.
Vaginal Wall Repair
A vaginal wall repair, also known as an anterior colporrhaphy or posterior colporrhaphy is a surgical procedure to repair or reinforce the layers of tissue between the bladder or rectum and the vagina. The requirement for this type of surgery usually originates from a vaginal prolapse into either the front or back walls of the vagina. This procedure can be performed under a local or a general anaesthetic.
An anterior colporrhaphy relates to the repair of the front wall of the vagina, when the bladder drops out of its normal position and bulges into the front of the vagina.
A posterior colporrhaphy relates to the repair of the back wall of the vagina, when the rectum drops out of its normal position and bulges into the back of the vagina, which may result in bowel dysfunction.
Oophorectomy Surgery
An oophorectomy involves the surgical removal of either one or both ovaries. This type of surgery may be performed for a variety of different reasons, including patients with ovarian cancer, a tubo-ovarian abscess, endometriosis, ovarian cysts or tumours or if an ovary is twisted. It can also be a preventative procedure for women at risk of ovarian cancer.
Sterilisation Reversal
When a woman is sterilised, it can involve cutting, sealing or blocking the fallopian tubes to stop eggs being transported to the womb. Female sterilisation reversal is a procedure which involves removing the blocked part of the fallopian tube and then re-joining or reconnecting the ends of the tube.
Many factors can affect the ability to conceive following sterilisation reversal including age, the condition of the fallopian tubes, presence of scar tissue, or any other gynaecological conditions.
