General surgery (1) at Circle Birmingham Hospital

The General Surgery Department at Circle Birmingham Hospital delivers a wide-ranging service, both investigative and surgical.

It investigates and treats the causes of conditions such as rectal bleeding, excessive sweating and pelvic floor disorders. Its specialist consultants remove breast lumps and perform mastectomies, remove anal fistulas, treat haemorrhoids and perform repair hernias.

They perform gastroscopies (investigations using a thin tube fitted with a light and camera) to examine the oesophagus. They remove cancerous tumours in the breast, liver, stomach and intestines and perform a number of operations on the thyroid gland.

They undertake minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery on internal haemorrhoids and remove gallbladders, also by a keyhole procedure. These minimally invasive operations are performed with the aid of a laparoscope (a tube fitted with a camera which is inserted into the body through a small incision, enabling the surgeon to see – and if necessary treat – areas of disease).

These techniques avoid the need to make large incisions, can often be performed as day cases and speed post-operative recovery.
