Lesley Lock

Hospital Director

Lesley began her career as a biomedical scientist in the NHS in Newcastle.  Among her 22 years working in healthcare, she has served more than a decade at Nuffield, as Pathology Manager, Operations Manager, Hospital Commissioning Manager and most recently, for three-and-a-half years, as Hospital Director. She has also worked for the National Institute for Health Research.

Lesley joined us from Nuffield Health Tees Hospital, where she was Hospital Director, leading the organisation to “Outstanding” by the CQC in 3 domains: Caring, Responsive and Well-led.

Laura Hill

Head of Nursing and AHPs

Laura qualified as a registered nurse from Nottingham University in 1998, then went to work in several large teaching hospitals in London, initially specialised in neonatal intensive care nursing.

She went on to work in a variety of nursing roles and specialities, before moving into nursing management in 2003.  Her senior roles include: matron in a busy acute trust; project manager for a public health campaign; registered nursing home manager and a risk assessment manager. In addition, in her spare time, Laura works as a nurse expert witness.

Prior to commencing her post at Circle Bath, Laura was ‘Head of Risk and Governance for Women and Children’ in a large acute trust.

Laura is passionate about patient safety and satisfaction, and staff well-being.

Mr Andrew Chambler

Clinical Chairman, Consultant & CU Lead

Andrew is the Clinical Chairman at Circle Bath. He has been a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in the UK for the past 14 years, having qualified at St Mary’s Hospital medical School, part of Imperial College, in London.

He gained his Shoulder & Elbow Fellowship with Professor Carr in Oxford and has since been awarded travelling fellowships to UK & Europe as well as to the world renowned Mayo Clinic in the USA, by the British Elbow & Shoulder Society.

Prior to joining Circle Bath, he was Clinical Director of Orthopaedics at Yeovil District Hospital where he developed the shoulder & elbow service. He concentrated on advanced arthroscopic techniques and joint replacement but also lead on quality control through the audit of surgical outcomes.

Whilst continuing at Yeovil, in 2010 he joined Circle Bath as a surgical partner to promote a new healthcare provider for the NHS as well as private patients. In 2013 he moved full-time to Circle as the first Executive Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon working at both the Reading and Bath hospitals.

Travis Kitchen

Head of Finance and Performance

Travis is a qualified Chartered Accountant and joined Circle Bath in October 2018, as a Management Accountant. He later moved to Head of Finance and Performance for the site in 2019.

Prior to this, Travis has worked within the healthcare industry as a Management Accountant, overseeing the financial performance of different service areas. This included service transformation, to bring areas of the business back into financial health and leading on business growth opportunities, including the mobilisation of new services and tender bids.

Mr Neil Bradbury

Consultant and CU Lead

Neil Bradbury is an internationally-acclaimed consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising in the treatment of knees. Neil was instrumental in the formation of Circle Health believing that patients deserved better care in the best possible environment. He continues to advise the business as a founding member of the executive team.

Neil trained in orthopaedic surgery at the Nottingham's Queens Medical Centre, one of the biggest and most well-known orthopaedic hospitals in the country. He has also trained abroad in Australia with Dr Leo Pinczewski and Dr Mervyn Cross, and in the USA with Dr Richard Steadman.

He is a pioneer in knee surgery offering patients the latest proven, advanced techniques for treatment of knee problems. Neil has a special interest in complex and multiple knee ligament injuries and teaches surgery  around the world.

Mr Richard Edwards

Consultant and CU Lead

Mr Richard Edwards runs the elective Adult Hydrocephalus Service at Circle Bath Hospital. He is the largest single implanter of shunts in the United Kingdom. His main areas of neurosurgical expertise include surgery for hydrocephalus including shunt surgery and complex neuroendoscopy. Mr Edwards was on the external advisory committee to the CMACE Head Injury in Children Study.

He also has substantial experience in day case lumbar microdiscectomy, lumber microdiscectomy, lumbar decompression surgery and revision microdiscectomy surgery. 

Mr Edwards lectures on the Neuropsychology Masters Degree course at the University of Bristol on the subject of head injury.

Having completed his formal neurosurgical training in the UK in 2005, he undertook a 12-month clinical fellowship in Paediatric Neurosurgery at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. As part of this fellowship he received additional specialist training in the identification and management of non-accidental head injury in children.

Mr Jamie McIntosh

Consultant and CU Lead

Mr Jamie McIntosh is an experienced Consultant Surgeon at Circle Bath hospital, who specialises in all aspects of cosmetic, reconstructive and breast surgery. Jamie is a core member of the breast cancer multidisciplinary team at the RUH in Bath, and works with other breast cancer specialists in looking after patients with both symptomatic and screen-detected breast cancer. 

Having completed a comprehensive UK surgical training he was awarded one of a limited number of prestigious National Oncoplastic Breast Surgical Fellowships before taking up his substantive consultant appointment in Bath.

He is an invited faculty member of the Royal College of Surgeons Oncoplastic Breast Surgery course, the European Cadaveric Oncoplastic Breast Surgical Skills Course and the Royal College of Surgeons Surgical Skills Course.

Having completed a laboratory research based higher degree, he was awarded an MD by Bristol University and has published and presented his work nationally and internationally at numerous meetings.

His research interests are now more clinical and patient outcome focused, and has supervised a number of projects as a consultant in Bath as well as being involved with patient recruitment to national research trials.

Mr Matthew Burwell

Consultant and CU Lead

Mr Burwell is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Circle Bath Hospital. He is nationally-acknowledged for hip surgery and referred to by consultant surgeons from around the country.

He qualified as a doctor from the University of London and undertook specialist surgical training in Orthopaedics and trauma on the North West Thames Rotation, based at the Royal Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, completing his final year of training at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital at Stanmore. He went on to receive advanced training in adult hip reconstruction as the Arthroplasty Fellow to Professor Don Howie at the University of South Australia.

He has developed expertise in all forms of adult hip reconstruction and joint replacement including the use of cemented and un-cemented hip replacement implants and modern materials such as metal and ceramic bearings. He undertakes revision hip replacement surgery and has a decade of experience of the use of hip resurfacing (e.g. the 'Birmingham' hip, an option for younger and more active patients).

Mr Burwell continues with a trauma practice at the Royal United Hospital, in particular specialising in surgery for complex fractures of the hip and for fractures around previous hip replacements implants (i.e. peri-prosthetic fractures). He is highly acclaimed for expertise in hip replacement and revision surgery.
