What is banded gastric bypass?

Banded gastric bypass surgery is a weight loss surgery which is designed to help patients that are obese lose weight.

This is the most common restrictive weight loss surgery available, and is effective because of the restriction on the stomach capacity that it provides. If successful, this surgery can lead to significant weight loss.

What does banded gastric band involve?

The stomach is divided to create a small pouch. The remainder of the stomach is left intact. The small intestine is attached to both parts of the stomach, but due to the partitioning of the stomach, food only enters the small pouch.

In addition to bypassing the rest of the stomach and creating intestinal malabsorption, a ring is placed above the junction of the stomach and intestine which will reduce the possibility of dilatation of this junction in the future which could be a cause of weight regain. This is a theory with encouraging early results awaiting long term future data and research.

What is the recovery like?

It is normal to feel some pain when you wake up from the surgery. For the first 24 hours you will be only be allowed a liquid diet, after which solid foods will be gradually reintroduced into your diet.

Most patients are able to leave the hospital within 24 hours but you will be required to limit your physical activities for the first 4-6 weeks. After this period you should be able to return to most everyday activities.

Am I a candidate for this procedure?

Typically candidates that qualify for this procedure are at least 100lbs over their ideal body weight and have a BMI (body mass index) of 40 or higher. It is often recommended to patients who have failed to lose weight through less invasive methods (such as diet and exercise).

One of the best ways to determine whether you are a good candidate for banded gastric bypass is to make an appointment with one of our consultants. They can assess your unique medical needs and help determine whether this is a good option for you.
