NHS has had a market for almost 20 years, says commentator

The proposals contained in the health white paper are nothing new, but are simply an extension of Conservative reforms of the 1990's, one commentator has argued.

Writing in The Independent, health editor Jeremy Laurance says it should come as no surprise that Andrew Lansley produced his white paper in just 54 days - all he did was 'tweak' the document that launched Conservative NHS reforms 20 years ago.

He concludes that the market in healthcare, offering private organisations the chance to compete, is not new, but has been operating for two decades.
