Personal Profile

As a senior hip surgeon, Matthew Burwell has been a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon for over twenty years, working at the Bath Clinic.

Mr Burwell qualified as a doctor from the University of London in 1988. He then undertook specialist training in Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery on the Northwest Thames rotation; based at the Royal Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. His final year of training was completed at the prestigious Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital at Stanmore. Mr Burwell passed the specialist FRCS(Orth) examination in 1997. The same year Mr Burwell completed his Orthopaedic training he undertook advanced training in Adult Hip Reconstruction as the Arthroplasty Fellow to Professor Don Howie at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, University of South Australia.

At Bath Clinic, Matthew Burwell offers Mako® robotic-arm surgery; this is specifically designed technology developed for complex hip and knee replacement surgeries. The technology comprises a navigation system combined with a robotic arm. Mr Burwell became a ‘Mako certified’ specialist by Stryker in November 2018. This form of surgery allots for more accurate results, less trauma to the bone and tissue, which lends to better surgical results, less pain and a faster post-operative recovery.

Mr Burwell’s Orthopaedic practice is dedicated to the management of hip problems for younger and older adult patients. Once an accurate diagnosis is made, he has a follow up discussion with his patient outlining all operative and non-operative procedures available. Mr Burwell has developed expertise in all forms of adult hip reconstruction and joint replacement surgery; this allows each patient to have their treatment tailor-made to suit their circumstances. These include both cemented and uncemented hip replacement implants using modern materials including ceramic, oxinium and the latest wear-resistant plastics. He also does hip replacement surgery for those patients whose original hip replacement has worn out or is functioning poorly, this includes ‘metal-on-metal’ hip replacements.

Mr Burwell does careful pre-operative planning utilising digital x-rays, and where necessary CT scans. This allows for the patient’s natural anatomy to be reconstructed, with the aim to restore and equalise leg lengths, and optimise long term function; allowing the patient to return to unrestricted activities.
